Frequently Ask Questions.
1. What Does It Cost To Get My Smoke Alarms Compliant
The cost of smoke alarm compliance depends on several factors, including the number of bedrooms, levels, and the accessibility of your home. That’s why we recommend booking an on-site inspection. We’ll assess your property, explain how many alarms are required, the best locations for installation, the type of alarms needed, and provide you with a clear total cost for compliance.
2. How Long Before You Will Have Smoke Alarms Installed
As a small family business, we pride ourselves on providing fast, reliable service and getting your home smoke alarm compliant as quickly as possible. In most cases, our lead times are between 3–7 days from inspection to installation.
3. What Type of Smoke Alarms Do You Install
Under Queensland legislation, smoke alarms must be photoelectric, interconnected, and compliant with Australian Standard AS 3786:2014. They must also be installed in the correct locations throughout the home to meet current compliance requirements.
At Puusaari Electrical, we install REDS smoke alarms — a high-quality, reliable brand designed to meet all current Queensland smoke alarm legislation and safety standards.
4. Is It Law To Be Compliant By 1st January 2027?
Yes. Under Queensland legislation, all homes must comply with the updated smoke alarm laws by 1st January 2027. This applies to all owner-occupied properties, not just rental properties.
To comply, smoke alarms must be photoelectric, interconnected, less than 10 years old, compliant with AS 3786:2014, and installed in the required locations throughout the home.
5. How often should smoke alarms be replaced or tested?
Smoke alarms should be tested regularly to ensure they’re operating correctly. We recommend testing your alarms monthly.
Most smoke alarms should be fully replaced every 10 years, as sensors can become less reliable over time. Queensland legislation also requires interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all homes by January 1, 2027.
If you’re unsure whether your smoke alarms are compliant, we can inspect, test, and upgrade your system to current standards.
6. What's The Value Of a Wall Controller?
We highly recommend installing a wall controller with your interconnected smoke alarm system. A wall controller allows you to easily test, silence, and locate your smoke alarms from one convenient location without needing to access each individual alarm.
This is particularly beneficial in larger homes, multi-storey properties, or homes with high ceilings where alarms can be difficult to reach. Wall controllers also make ongoing testing and maintenance far easier, helping ensure your smoke alarm system remains safe, functional, and compliant.
7. Is Your Site Inspection Free?
Absolutely — our site inspections and quotes are 100% free with no obligation.
We’ll meet with you in person, inspect your home, discuss your requirements, explain your compliance options, and determine the best locations and types of smoke alarms for your property. We’ll also discuss suitable installation times and provide a clear, upfront price for the complete installation so you can make an informed decision with confidence.
8. Is There Warranty On The Smoke Alarms Installed?
All RED Smoke Alarms we install come backed with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty. RED alarms are designed for long-term reliability and are fully compliant with current Queensland smoke alarm legislation and Australian Standard AS 3786:2014.
As long as the alarms are installed and used correctly, the warranty covers manufacturing defects and faults in materials or workmanship for the full 10-year lifespan of the alarm.
We choose RED Smoke Alarms because they are:
- Australian owned and supported
- Photoelectric and interconnected
- Designed specifically for Australian homes
- Reliable, high-quality alarms with excellent local support
